In 2024 the coastal scientist, Helene Burningham and I were awarded a grant by the Environment Agency’s 3C’s (Championing Coastal Coordination) programme for a project to explore the potential to bring a broader range of local knowledge to bear as a part of the consultation process towards a more inclusive approach to an estuary management plan.
Of the initiatives that have come from this programme, we have produced two publications:
‘Ways of Knowing’, an A1 poster featuring a painting, ‘Bawdsey Ferry at Felixstowe’ by John Moore of Ipswich circa 1890, as an invitation to consider how, why and what has changed in that landscape over the intervening 100 years.
‘Lost to the Sea’ a booklet based upon watercolour paintings by Margaret Wyllie of the disintegrating wartime pillboxes along the Bawdsey cliff frontage. This again is to reflect upon the meaning of defence, expectations of permanence and experience of loss in the context of an eroding coastline.
These publications are available for visitors to the Deben Marine Centre on Bawdsey Quay.
